TREWIN, DOUGLAS F. - Parrsboro, Nova Scotia - It is with gratitude for his full rich life and unwavering love / support for his family, that Doug’s children announce his death, on May 28, 2013 at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS, at the age of 87. Born in Point de Bute, NB to the late William H. and Mary C. (Bonang) Trewin, he was predeceased by his wife, Betty (Fleming) in 1985. He is survived by five children, Mary (Gordon Cranton) and Nancy (Doug Heffel), all of Amherst, NS; Linda (John Nugent), Saint John; Billy (Jane McKnight), Moncton; and Kerry, Amherst, NS; seven grandchildren, Rob Wiles and Heather Legere, April Sorichetti, Beth and J.T. Nugent, Jeff Trewin, Mary Beth Fromm and Theresa Schrader; and nine great grandchildren. He is also survived by special friend, Marilyn Orr, of Parrsboro, NS; and his siblings, Dorothy Thompson, Amherst, NS; Marjorie Parker and Florence Kodis of Hamilton, Ont., and Robert Trewin, Edmonton, Alta., sister-in-law, Marjorie Trewin, Charlottetown, PEI, and brother-in-law, Richard Fleming, Kildare, PEI. He was predeceased by siblings, Henry, Daisy (Payne), Arthur (Jay) and Raymond. At 17, Doug was accepted in the Royal Canadian Navy in Halifax. As a Naval Commando his service included landing, as part of the allied forces, at Juno Beach, Normandy, France on D-Day, and serving for a year with the Peace Keeping Mission in Pearl Harbour. Upon his return from these duties, Doug began a 41 year career with the then Canada Electric Company in Amherst as a linesman. He moved his family to Parrsboro in 1963 to assume his responsibilities as the District Supervisor with the NS Power Corporation until his retirement in October of 1987. In the last few years, Doug moved back to Amherst so he could be closer to his children and was residing at Centennial Villa at the time of his death. Aside from the delight he took in stories about his grandchildren and great grandchildren, he always felt best when he could do something to help someone else. His ‘formal’ volunteer work included his years with the Parrsboro Lions Club and Legion Branch #45, Parrsboro.
All are welcome to attend a Veteran Tribute and Celebration of Life Service at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Parrsboro, NS, Rev. Greg Doyle officiating, followed immediately by a reception. Private graveside committal in St. Brigid’s Cemetery, Parrsboro. Family and friends should remember Doug in their own unique way. In keeping with his way-of-life, individual acts of kindness or donations to either Legion Branch #45, Parrsboro or Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre Foundation seem fitting. Arrangements entrusted to Smith’s Funeral Home, Parrsboro, NS. Online condolences at www.smithsfuneralhome.com
