We, the family of Kenneth McDonald, age 88, are very sad to announce his passing on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Northside General Hospital.
Born in Isle Aux Morts, Nfld. on May 1, 1925, Ken was the son of the late Michael and Annie Maud (Knott) McDonald. Growing up in Newfoundland, Ken was always a man of the sea. As a young man, he would fish with his father on their cherished boats, Rose Dorothy and Allan Graham. Ken served with the Merchant Marine during the Second World War. After moving to North Sydney he worked for a period of time with Irving Oil before continuing on to Navigation School in Halifax and obtaining his Captains Ticket to work with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority on the pilot boat in North Sydney and Port Hawkesbury. Ken was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, and a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Ken was very much an outdoorsman, enjoying deer, rabbit and duck hunting. Also an avid fly fisherman, he fished for years in North River, Margaree Valley and Codroy Valley in Newfoundland.
Above all though, Ken was a loving husband, the best father and wonderful grandfather. A very quiet and wise man Ken was always thinking and sharing his wisdom with those around him. We are so proud and thankful to have had him in our lives.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Battiste); daughters, Jane (Robert) Black, Dartmouth and Brenda (Arnold) Sparkes, Hammonds Plains; granddaughters, Jane Elizabeth Wood, Pembroke, Ont., Rebecca Anne Sparkes, Victoria, B.C. and grandson, Michael Kenneth Robert Black, Toronto, Ont. Also surviving is his brother, Lorne (Millie), Riverview and many nieces and nephews.
Ken was predeceased by brothers, Tom, Herman, Jim, Allan and sisters, Florence Anne, Cedella and Vivian.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. As per Ken's wishes, there will be no visitation. A private family service will be held in the funeral home chapel, with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
The family sends a very special thanks to Northside Homemakers especially Kathy Walker, Northside at Home Care Services, the staff of 4W and 2W at the Northside General Hospital, Dr. John Kirkpatrick, Marilyn and our special angel, Laura, and Dr. Poulos and the palliative care team for their care and compassion during this very difficult time. Ken fought to the very end.
Memorial donations may be sent to a charity of choice.
