It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alexander ‘Sandy’ MacLellan on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at the Glace Bay Hospital.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Richard ‘Dick’ and Christina (MacNeil) MacLellan.
He grew up in MacKay's corner, where he loved playing little league baseball with the Phalen Bakery Reds. He enjoyed watching sports and was a fan of the Boston Bruins and Toronto Blue Jays.
At the age of 18, he worked at the Red & White grocery store, where he met the love of his life. He then went on to work at Nova Scotia Power and the Heavy Water Plants in Glace Bay and Port Hawkesbury as a pipe fitter. In later years, he became well known for his carpentry skills. He had his own woodworking business and specialized in hardwood floors. He was also a volunteer and member of the board of directors for the Glace Bay Food Bank. However, the job he loved the most was being the grandfather to six beautiful grandchildren.
Sandy is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Colleen (Petrie) MacLellan; his son, Sandy (Donna), Ottawa; his daughter, Millie (Billy), Glace Bay and his six grandchildren, Tyler, Brandon, Haley, Emily, Abby, and Cassie.
He is also survived by his sisters, Anna & Mary, Sackville, N.B., Chris (Carl), Lower Sackville, N.S. and his brother, Richard (Angela, Richmond Hill, Ont.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Penelope and Peggy as well as his longtime friend, Frankie MacLeod.
The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kevin McNeil and the nursing staff of the Glace Bay Hospital ICU for their care and support.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. In accordance with Sandy's wishes, cremation has taken place and a funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at Holy Cross Church on Thursday at 2 p.m. followed by interment in the parish cemetery. A reception will follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Lung Association, the Glace Bay Food Bank, or a charity of your choice.
