Margaret Mary Power-Murphy
The death occurred peacefully at the Kings County Memorial Hospital, Montague, P.E.I., on Wednesday, June 19, 2013, of the much-loved Margaret Mary Power-Murphy of Cardigan, P.E.I., aged 91 years.
Margaret Mary was born on October 27, 1921, in Cardigan, P.E.I., to her late parents, Cephus Power and Agnes (nee Roche) Jarvis. Sister of the late Earl Francis Power, late infant brother Joseph, and Bernice Jarvis.
Margaret grew up in Cardigan, and in March 1941 she and her childhood sweetheart, Albert Edward Murphy from the neighbouring village of Summerville married in Saint Anthony’s, Montréal, QC. Margaret dedicated her life to her work and to making a home for her large family (Cornwall, Parkdale, Summerside, Prince Edward Island National Park – Cavendish/Dalvay, and New Brunswick’s Fundy National Park).
Margaret is predeceased by her husband Albert, and children Sylvia Anne Cameron (36 years) and Ronald Edward (8 years). She is survived by Alberta Murphy (Morley Smith), David Murphy, Gloriajean Murphy, Donna Picard (Jean-Guy), Joseph Murphy, Mary Murphy (Lynn Taylor), Lisa Murphy (Kevin Brooks), Laurie Murphy (Stephen Lyon), and Ronalda Murphy (Edward Greenspon). Her grandchildren are Lorna, Michelle, Geoff, Christopher, Clayton, Joel, Desirée, Sarah, Michael, Craig, Ryan, Kellie, Simon, Korina, Kyla, Lisa, Andrew, Kaleigh, Sara, Sylvia and Ava. Great-grandchildren are Braydon, Ashley, Alana, Noah, Ainsley, Carson, Chloe, Owen, Lydia, Kaitlyn, Jasper, Seymour, Desmond, Kara, Caitlyn, Kennedy, Caleb, Lily Margaret, Nolan and Madison (due in July).
Margaret had a long and rich life as a loving friend to many, such as Sister Gemma, and Evelyn Daley, and cherished nephews, nieces and cousins. She was also a mentor to hundreds of women in her volunteer work as a commissioner with the Girl Guides of Canada, and the P.E.I. Advisory Council on the Status of Women. As well, she was an example of tenacity and humility to her fellow students in her University of Prince Edward Island Bachelor of Arts program, graduating with Honours in History in 1992, and a UPEI Celtic Studies Diploma in 1993. A life-long student, she was an avid bird-watcher, ice sports enthusiast, and always had a historical novel nearby. And, whatever her means, she always gave generously to charities and individuals in need. Margaret taught us that everyone deserved to be cherished in their uniqueness. She made everyone feel special and deeply loved.
Margaret lived in many beautiful places in her life, but the view from her room at Perrin’s Marina Villa on the beautiful Montague River may have been her finest. Her friends, table mates, and all those who generously loved and cared for Margaret, as if they were her own family this past year, are in her family’s warmest of thoughts. Thanks are extended to them, and to those on staff at the Queen Elizabeth and Kings County Hospitals.
