NEW GLASGOW – Alan Wendall “Demp” Murray, age 78, of New Glasgow and formerly of Trenton, passed away Thursday, June 20, 2013 in the Aberdeen Hospital surrounded by family.
Born in Hillside, he was a son of the late Hector and Laura (Fanning) Murray.
He was retired from the Nova Scotia Power Generating Plant, Trenton. In sports, Demp was part of the Trenton Jr.’s ’51-’52 Maritime Jr. Hockey Championship Team and a member of the ’61-’62 Maritime Softball Championship team. He coached minor ball and minor hockey for several years, served as President of Trenton Minor Hockey and was also one of the original members of the committee who oversaw the construction of the Trenton Rink. He was a member of the Pictou County Sports Heritage Hall of Fame. An avid bowler and golfer, he was a member of Abercrombie Golf Club for 50 years. He was a member of the Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Association and a former member of the Elks Club.
He is survived by his wife: Kathleen “Nat” (Fraser); daughter, Jennifer, her son Colton; son, Robert, his sons Craig and Matthew and their mother Jennifer; brother, Donald (Jean), New Glasgow; sister, Carol Murray, Alberta; special cousin, Melvin “Ike” (Marie) Murray; special friends, Charlie and Margie Fergus; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother Vernon.
Visitation 6-9 p.m. Saturday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, Trenton. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow, with Mrs. Helen Humphreys officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery followed by a reception in the First United Church Hall.
Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Unit, Pictou County VON, Pictou County Prostate Cancer Support Association or a charity of choice.
