Surrounded by her loving family, the death of Dorothy Beatrice (Burke) Smith of Saint John, N.B., wife of Reginald Smith, occurred on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born at Fortune Bridge, P.E.I., she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Ressa (Aitken) Burke. Dorothy was employed as a secretary for the Magistrate, Ken Martin and graduated from Union Commercial College, P.E.I. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church, Loyalist Temple #13 Pythian Sisters, and the Ladies Orange Benevolent Association. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Besides her husband of 66 years, she is survived by two daughters, Gloria (Allan) Blue of Quispamsis, Judith (Sandy) Hetherington of Rothesay; two grandsons, Owen and Nathan; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by four sisters, Cora Edwards, Lina Keith, Olga Dewolfe and Alda Burke; three brothers, Lester, Ray and Clarence Burke. The funeral service was held from Grace Presbyterian Church, Saint John, New Brunswick, on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at 2 p.m. Interment took place in Fernhill Cemetery. For those who wish, remembrances to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be appreciated by the family.
