Gilbert Gouthro, age 71 of Main Street, Glace Bay, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 23, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Gardiner Mines, he was the son of the late Daniel and Effie (Morrison) (Gouthro), McNabb.
Gilbert was employed with Devco for about 12 years and then worked in the construction business with Harris & Harris Paving Company, Sydney for several years. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. Gilbert also enjoyed working around cars, playing bingo and gardening. But mostly, he will be remembered as a very caring and compassionate man who had a great sense of humour and a deep love for his family and grandchildren.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Margaret (MacLeod) Gouthro, four daughters, Bernadette (Eddie) MacKeigan, Bridgeport, Amanda Bryden (Wayne), Glace Bay, Geralda (Ronnie Bryden), Calgary, Semone Gouthro, Ontario, three sons, Gilbert ‘Douie’ (Rose Mary), Dominion, Darrell (Cindy), Calgary and Jason, Glace Bay.
Gilbert is also survived by one sister, Nancy Lyons (Blaine), Glace Bay, three brothers, Clifford, Glace Bay, Alex (Gwen), New Waterford, Danny (Jackie), Ontario, nineteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was predeceased by one sister, Catherine ‘Sissy’ Burns, three brothers, George, John ‘Bunny’, Charlie and three siblings in infancy.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay.
The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 11 a.m. in Holy Cross Church, Glace Bay with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Gilbert, memorial donations in his memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
