Sr. Berthold MacKey
Sister Berthold MacKey died peacefully on July 29, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Springhill, she was the daughter of the late Patrick Leo and Stella Maris (Desmond) MacKey.
Sister Berthold made her religious profession in the Congregation of Notre Dame on Aug. 24, 1949. Her many years of service in the Congregation were spent as a dedicated teacher, librarian, bursar, pastoral ministry to the aged and infirm. She was a teacher in New Victoria, Sydney, Mabou, Newcastle, N.B., Iona, Charlottetown, P.E.I. and Truro. She was 16 years as librarian at the Coady International Institute in Antigonish. There she enjoyed interacting with students of various cultures. She did volunteer ministry at the Glen Haven Manor in New Glasgow and served as bursar for the local CND community.
Sister Berthold was a deeply spiritual woman, a person of integrity with an immense sense of duty. Having a beautiful singing voice, she was also an avid lover of good music, especially Scottish tunes. Her final years of retirement were spent at St. Joseph’s Convent, Mabou. She will be greatly missed by her Sister companions and friends for her gentle manner, her generousity and her hearty laugh.
Visitation will take place at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel on Wednesday, July 31 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 1 at 2 p.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish (St. Joseph’s), Sydney. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
