NEW GLASGOW – Ella May Smith, passed away peacefully at the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the age of 93 years.
She was the youngest of five children born to Joseph and Christie Anne (Bourgeois) Goss.
Ella was predeceased by her parents and brothers: William “Bill” Goss, James “Jim” Goss; sister, Bertha “Bert” Marginson, and a sibling who died in infancy.
Ella was born and grew up in Stellarton, and spent much of her adult life in Parkdale, New Glasgow. She was married for 43 years to Henry James Smith, until his death in 1985. For 30 years, she served as accountant and bookkeeper for the family business, Smith’s Taxi of New Glasgow. Ella and Henry had one son, Kenneth Allan Smith, who predeceased Ella in 2006. A faithful parishioner of Christ Church in Stellarton and Saint Georges in New Glasgow, Ella served for 40 years in various capacities with the Anglican Church Women’s League, ACWL. On her 90th birthday, she was presented with a certificate from the Anglican Dioceses of Nova Scotia in recognition of her many years of service. For eight years, she served as Secretary-Treasurer of the New Glasgow branch of St. John Ambulance, which was re-formed after the war in 1960, and she was a Red Cross volunteer in Parkdale for a number of years. A fine and talented seamstress, in the latter part of her life she crafted many beautiful quilts for family and friends. Her favorite winter pastime was to feed the deer and birds in her backyard.
Ella is survived by grandchildren Paula and Allan (Shannon) Smith; four great-grandchildren: Brooke, Morgan, Reese and Shaye; daughters-in-law, Lynn (MacDougall) Smith and Marijane (Rose) Smith; nieces: Ann Robinson, Mary Johnston, Karen Marginson, Joan Chabassol and Sharon Goss. She will also be missed by her companion, her cat Ginger. A loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Visitation 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, 55 Almont Ave., New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in Saint Georges Anglican Church, 199 Temperance St., New Glasgow, with Rev. Aidan Kingsbury officiating, followed by interment in Brookside Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Saint Georges Anglican Church or a charity of choice.
