B.A. (Bert) Steele

Peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Saturday, August 23, 2008, of Mr. B.A. (Bert) Steele of Waterview Heights, Charlottetown, aged 86 years. Bert was a well-known businessman here on Prince Edward Island for many years having spent 50 years with General Motors in the capacities of dealership owner, car sales manager and car sales, up until his retirement from Walter Piccott Chev Olds Cadillac. He was also well- known in the local sports world having managed and played hockey for numerous hockey teams during the Big Four Hockey era. A veteran of the Second World War he served his country in the Royal Canadian Navy and was the recipient of the Governor’s General’s Medal. He was the beloved husband of 66 years to Pauline (Connell) Steele. He will also be sadly missed but fondly remembered by his son George (Debbie) Steele; daughters Kathy Steele (Leigh), Patsy MacDougall, Janice (Carl) Steele-Cheverie, Christine Steele (Kevin); nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; his brother, Garnet (Lorna) Steele; sister, Frances Hughes; sisters-in-law Loretta Steele, Hazel Steele; and his numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Herbert and Muriel (Doyle) Steele, his sons, Michael Steele and Herbie Steele, son-in-law Junior MacDougall, sisters and brothers: Mary MacGillivary, George Steele, Phillip Steele, George Steele, Father Eddie Steele and Theresa Cairns. Resting at the Hennessey Funeral Home until 9:45 Wednesday morning, then transferred to the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer for funeral mass at 10 a.m. with interment to follow in the family plot at the Roman Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Bert’s memory can be made to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Friends for Life Campaign.
