Douglas Mooers

MOOERS, DOUGLAS LAWRENCE - It is with heavy hearts and many tears that the family of Douglas L. Mooers, 86, of Nackawic, NB, announces that he passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at York Care Centre. Born at Day Hill, NB in 1927, Douglas was a much beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. Douglas is survived by his loving wife Frances (Clair) Mooers; daughters, Becky Dunn (Joseph Dunn) of Springfield, NB and Annie Mooers (Bernie Mulhern) of Davidson Lake, NB; three grandchildren, Stephanie Butland (Bradley Butland) of Toronto, ON, Lee Dunn of Fredericton, NB and Johanna Dunn of Sussex, NB. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Warren and Annie (Hersey) Mooers of Dumfries, NB; two sons, David Douglas and Larry Franklin and by his sister, Ruby Moore. He was also predeceased by several step-sisters and step-brothers, including Hilda Watson of Woodstock, NB. Along with his family and his strong ties to the Baptist Church in Nackawic, his other love was the great outdoors. From a young age, he loved being in the woods and his first job would find him working in the lumber camps that once dotted the province. He worked for many years at the Southampton Sawmill until he retired at the age of 63. After retirement, he spent much of his time keeping 'Fran' entertained, going to the lake, helping Annie and Bernie cut down trees (since they don't know how), helping Becky and Joe when needed and watching his grandchildren grow into adults. Douglas loved life and instilled a sense of adventure and humour in all that he did. A humble man, he was honest and true. Sadly in 2010, a series of strokes would take its toll on his speech and dementia would take its toll on his mind. Although he couldn't talk, he still knew people even as the last chapter of his life drew to a close. Though he will be missed by those who knew and loved him, his suffering has ended and he is at peace.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 16 at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic, NB from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, August 17, 2013 at Nackawic Baptist Church, 94 McNair Drive, Nackawic, NB at 1 p.m. with Rev. Jim Rhyno officiating. A reception will follow at the church. A private committal service will be held after the reception at the Barony Cemetery. In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, donations to the Nackawic Baptist Church, Barony Cemetery or the NB Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
