It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother, John Hector Whitty, who passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 19, 2013 at home; four days before his 87th birthday,
Born in Ingonish Beach, N.S. on Aug. 23, 1926, he was the son of the late John James & Marcella Anne (MacDonald) Whitty.
He worked as a stevedore at Marine Atlantic for 42 years, retiring in 1991. Dad’s heart was always in Ingonish fishing off Cape Smokey.
John Hector was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Parish, North Sydney and was an active member on many committees & fundraising activities until his illness in 2001. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus -5109.
John Hector was predeceased by his wife, Eva in July 2010; infant son, George and infant, daughter.
He is survived by his children, Marie (Greg) O’Flaherty, their children Greg (Cara) & Jennifer (Raymond) great-grandchildren, Gregory & Raymond of Sydney; Mabel Ivey & her daughter Kerri- Ann of North Sydney; John (Nicole) & their children Ryan, Laura & Emma of Cornwall, P.E.I.; and Michael (Dana) of North Sydney. Also surviving are sisters, Kay Taillon, Oakville, Ont. & Greta Gilbert, North Sydney and his brothers, Wallace, Ingonish; William & Earle, North Sydney; Timothy (Darlene), Groves Point; & Bobby (Heather), St. Catherines, Ont.; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, John Hector was also predeceased by his brothers, Harry & Russell and sister, Florence.
For their many years of kindness and care, the family is thankful to the Northside Homemakers.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at WJ Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph’s Church, with Fr. Patrick O’Neil officiating; burial to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
