FRANCIS MICHAEL BERNARD WHELAN

Date de naissance : 6 décembre 1914

Lieu de décès : Kamloops, Colombie Britannique, Canada
Date de décès : 19 août 2013

Francis Whelan, aged 98, passed away peacefully at Ridgeview Lodge on Monday, August 19th, 2013.

Francis was born in Hackney - London, England on December 06, 1914 to Michael and Mary Whelan. He was better known as "Mike" to many of his friends. Mike travelled extensively to many parts of the world. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Seventy years ago he immigrated to Canada and later was proud to become a Canadian citizen.

Mike's desire to help people was evident in the work he did throughout British Columbia. In 1959 he was instrumental in founding the Men's Shelter in Vancouver. He became a frequent volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Society and at the Men's Hostel in Vancouver.

Eventually he headed to Northern British Columbia and continued being an advocate for the less fortunate in the Kamloops Diocese. Fifty years ago he relocated to Kamloops and became an active parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish. He was a custodian of Our Lady of Perpetual School and later the Church.

Mike was influential in the founding of St. Vincent de Paul Society in Kamloops. He was also a faithful member of the Legion of Mary visiting shut-ins at home. Prayer was the foundation of Mike's life. Everyday at 3:00 he reverently prayed the Divine Mercy. His prayer books bore the signs of being well used as he remembered the needs of his many friends.

Mike is survived by relatives in England, Ireland and South Africa. He may not have had any living blood relatives in Canada, but all who knew him claimed him as a closest relative and dearest friend. We have benefited by our paths crossing.

A special thanks to Dr. Eccleston, the staff at Ridgeview Lodge and the previous care centers where Mike resided. Your support and compassion was appreciated.

Prayers will be recited on Thursday, August 22nd, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 635 Tranquille Road. The Reverend Father Peter Nguyen will be celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 23rd, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery following the luncheon.

Should friends desire, donations may be made to St. Vincent de Paul or a charity of your choice.

Arrangements entrusted to Kamloops Funeral Home.
