NEW GLASGOW – Ann Elizabeth Ross Hanes, of Elm St., New Glasgow, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Ann was born in Halifax, the daughter of the late Myron and Minnie (Ross) MacKay.
She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Bob; brother, Ivan (Monica), St. Catharines, Ont; nephews: Scott (Margie), Burlington, Ont.; Ron (Sheila), Osgoode, Ont., niece, Carol (J.T.), St. Catharines, Ont.
She attended Lemarchant St. School, Queen Elizabeth High School and graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1957 Ann met her future and devoted husband Bob in a university coffee shop and they were married in 1960 at St. David’s Presbyterian Church in Halifax. Anns’ pleasing personality and her habit of always putting everyone else ahead of herself made her loved and respected by all who knew her. Ann loved to golf and was a member of the Abercrombie Country Club. Her return home from a golf game was always announced by a resounding “Fore” in Anns’ usual good natured way. Ann also loved to curl, was a life member of the Bluenose Curling Club and represented her club in many provincial bonspiels. Ann was a long time and devoted member of the Sir Frederick Banting Chapter of the IODE. She was a member of the New Glasgow Gyrette Club and enjoyed the Gyro friendship and the many conventions which she and Bob attended all over the Maritime Provinces. She and Bob were also members of the St. Andrews Society of Pictou County. Ann was also a member of the Aberdeen Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered for many years in the Hospital gift shop. Ann loved feeding and watching the birds at her feeders – the hummingbirds, chickadees, song sparrows and all the others in her back yard including her pet crows. She loved all kinds of wildlife – the raccoons, even though they upset the bird feeders; the deer, even though they ate our tulips and the loons at our camp at Pringles Lake with their wild, wonderful cries. Ann loved dogs – especially her beautiful Golden Retriever, Brandy, who shared and warmed our lived for the last 12 years. Ann enjoyed her annual winter trips to Florida with the golf games; the lovely beaches of Madeira Beach and of course, the shopping. She also loved the annual fall foliage and shopping trips which she and Bob took to New England.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service 2 p.m. Sunday in Trinity United Church, New Glasgow, with Rev. Dr. Norman Marple officiating. Reception to follow. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hope for Wildlife, S.P.C.A or Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
