SMITH, Gerald Roy (Jerry)Gerald Roy Smith passed away after a courageous battle with ALS on September 25, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. Jerry was born February 15, 1935, in Melanson, NS, in the Annapolis Valley. He was one of 12 children of Rachel Smith Carey. As a youth, he loved many sports and was on his local hockey team. He later helped coach the Chilliwack Junior Jets and was home Statistician for the Winnipeg Jets Hockey franchise (WHL). He left home at a young age to work in various jobs. At 18, he lied about his age and enlisted to fight in Korea. Jerry was a proud lifelong member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He served 32 years with 2nd Battalion Queen's Own Rifles of Canada and 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He quickly rose through the ranks and served at bases in Victoria, Germany, Calgary, Chilliwack (BC), Winnipeg and Gagetown (NB). He retired as Brigade Regimental Sargeant Major of 1 Combat Brigade Group in Calgary. He then enjoyed a second career as a Field Service Officer for Bank of Montreal in Vancouver, BC. After retiring, Jerry and his wife Deanna moved to High River, AB, and joined Branch 71 Royal Canadian Legion. There he administered the Poppy Fund for three years, visited schools and hospitals, and helped with Remembrance Day services and the meat draws. Jerry is survived by Deanna (his wife of 56 years), daughters Marie (Gene) Kramps, Jane Smith, Cindy Smith, son Timothy Smith, grandchildren Sean (Bobi-Jo) Moore and Laura (Derech) Kramps, great- grandchildren Bobbi, Anthony, Nicholas, Dylan, Lyndsay and Brandon. He is predeceased by his siblings Hughie Smith, Verna Murphy, Vance Smith, Merle Smith, Betty Williams, Clifford (Sonny) Smith. He is fondly remembered by brothers Joe (Ginger) Smith and Doug (Nanette) Carey, sisters Eva (Joe) de Crus, Ekie (Eric) Payne and Bonna Hyde, and a great many nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
