Peacefully at Hospice Niagara on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Born February 15, 1922, in Little Rock, Arkansas, U.S.A., as Franklin Elton, Hugh was adopted by the late Henry McCallum and grew up in Charlottetown, P.E.I. He served in the Canadian Army RCSS as a radio operator from September 1939 to September 1945. Married in 1956, he is predeceased by his beloved wife, Gwen Catharine Knight (2001), and youngest child, Catharine (2004). Lovingly remembered by his sons, Tim (Debi) and David (Julia); and daughters, Ellen and Rose Stengel (Barry Boyd); his grandchildren, Christine, Ashley, James and Dillon; and his great-grandchildren, Christian, Summer, Cody and Sky. Cherished as one of his own by Daria Limone (Frank). Hubert is also predeceased by three brothers; James Elton, Vincent Clifton and Julian St. Clair; and his sister, Myrna Swain (Eddie). He also leaves four half-siblings, Dilyse Brudo (Ouide), Elizabeth Bunting (Gary), his special love Wilma Powers (Frank) and Joe (Margo). Many relatives across Canada and the U.S. are saddened by his departure. The family is eternally grateful to the staff and volunteers at Hospice Niagara for filling Hugh’s final days with dignity and grace. Friends are invited to call at the Patterson Funeral Home, 6062 Main St., Niagara Falls, visiting Thursday 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated Friday at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Peace Church. Cremation will follow with interment at a later date in Lundy's Lane Cemetery. The vigil for Hugh will be celebrated Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home followed by a tribute in honour of his life.
