With broken hearts, we announce the sudden death of our sister, aunt and grand-aunt on Wednesday, Oct 23, 2013 at the Cape Breton Regional, Sydney.
Born in Indian Brook, Victoria County on April 30, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Donald John (DJ) and Annabelle (MacDonald) Smith.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and attended services when she was able to do so.
Christine was a graduate of Baddeck Rural High. She was a graduate of New Waterford Consolidated Hospital as a CNA and worked for many years at the Victoria County Hospital and at St. Rita Hospital until ill health forced her to retire.
During her illness, Christene was able to remain at home in the comfort of her loving family and friends.
She enjoyed crocheting, crosswords and watching birds. She was an avid reader and had a great love for animals.
She is survived by sister, Margaret MacKenzie; brothers, John and Winston Smith, Indian Brook; nephew, Craig Matheson, Breton Cove; nieces, Michelle Martell (Michael), Yarmouth, and Susan Matheson (Stephen), Big Baddeck; grandnephews, Michael (Morgan) and Owen Matheson, Breton Cove; grandnieces, Nora and Kamryn Fownes, Big Baddeck.
Christene was predeceased by her parents, sister, Evelyn Matheson, nephew, Brad Matheson, Breton Cove, and a sibling in infancy.
There will be a visitation at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, North River Bridge, N.S., Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Oct. 29 at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Glen Davies officiating. Burial to follow at Pine Hill Cemetery, N.S.
Many thanks to doctors, nurses and all staff of Victoria County Hospital, Northside General and the Cape Breton Regional, as well as EMS paramedics, for the care and compassion afforded to our loved one.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of the MacAskill Funeral Home.
