John Winslow

WINSLOW, JOHN EDWARD CONNELL - John Edward Connell Winslow, a Woodstock NB businessman and community leader, passed away at age 86, on December 7, 2013. John was born April 5, 1927, in Woodstock, to Major J. Douglas and Gretchen Winslow. He attended school in Woodstock, Lennoxville PQ, and Sackville NB, but not finding a match with his interests, joined the merchant marine and traveled to India, Africa and South America, a decision which fuelled his love of travel. After completing an investment dealer’s course in New York, he joined his father in business, brought the Central Trust Company to Woodstock, following that with Winslow Insurance, Real Estate, and Travel Agency. Upon his retirement he was appointed to the ACOA board and continued to serve on the boards of several associations. A devoted Rotarian, he served as District Governor, voting for the acceptance of women. On another occasion he led a study group to India for a cultural exchange. In addition to his years in Rotary, he served the community as a member of Carleton County Council, the Masonic Lodge, and St. John Ambulance among others; and, as a member of the town’s 60th Anniversary Committee was part of a team which helped establish a campus of the New Brunswick Community College in Woodstock. John loved the outdoors and spent many happy hours fishing, hunting, golfing, snowmobiling and skiing with family and friends. Summers were spent “at the lake” and he enjoyed travelling the world when time allowed. John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Wanda (Briggs); his children and grandchildren, Ann (children Gina, Michael, Cameron), Ned (wife Lorrie [Craig] and children Ryan, Rob, Ted, Anne), Jane (husband Jerry Trafford, children Alex, Courtney, Brittany), Bob (wife Mary-Ann [Campbell], children Shawn, Jessica, Drew, Luke) and Barbara (husband Robert Miceli, children Laura, Christina); fourteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Allwood (daughter Diane Morrison) of Fredericton, NB and Elizabeth Silva of Spokane, Washington.
