It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved mother, Lila Gwendolyn Morehouse Quigley, of Sandy Cove, Digby County, on December 1, 2013. Her four children were at her side. Born in Springhill, March 14, 1912, she was the daughter of Dr. Frederick Garland Morehouse, and Clara Blanche (Parker) Morehouse. Gwen grew up in Amherst, attended Cumberland County Academy, and graduated from Mount Allison University, Class of 1933, with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. After moving to Halifax with her family in 1933, she undertook further studies. She worked for several years at the synod office of the Church of England, prior to her marriage to Dr. Hadsel Gordon Quigley in 1940. During her years in Halifax, she greatly enjoyed her involvement with the All Saints Cathedral League, the IWK Hospital Auxiliary, the Gorsebrook Home and School Association, her neighbourhood bridge club, and the Waegwoltic Club. Following her husband's retirement in 1985, they moved to Sandy Cove, where she continued to reside in her own home until her death. She loved gardening and was an active member of the Digby Garden Club for many years. She loved to travel, visiting family in the eastern USA, Montreal, PEI, England, France, Australia, and South America. For several years she enjoyed spending the winter months in her condo in Longboat Key, Florida. During her later years, she enjoyed visits from her far flung family and friends. She celebrated her 100th birthday in Sandy Cove, and participated fully in the festivities, attended by so many. This past year, she was thrilled to be the family Matriarch at the Morehouse Family Reunion held in Sandy Cove in celebration of 230 years of Morehouse presence in Nova Scotia. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-seven years, Dr. H. Gordon Quigley, in 2007, as well as her brother, Dr. F. Ronald Morehouse, and his wife, Gay.She is survived by her four children, Richard (Noelle) Quigley, Digby, NS, Carol (Dr. Anthony) Measham, Longboat Key, Florida, Karen (Peter) Smith, Kentville, NS, and Gwen (Gary) Wilson, Sandy Cove, NS; eleven grandchildren, Dr. Diana Measham (Ben Stocking), Seattle, Washington, Dr.Toby Measham (Pardo Pannunzio), Montreal, QC, Jeremy (Felicity) Measham, Charlottetown, PEI, Mark (Bobbie) Measham, London, ON, Michael (Jacque) Quigley, Adelaide, S. Australia, Gillian Quigley, Digby, NS, Claire Smith, Halifax, NS, Ben (Rumiko) Smith, Kanazawa, Japan, Caroline (Shawn) McLeod, Halifax, NS, Rachael Wilson, Halifax, NS, and Jonathan Wilson, Halifax, NS; and eight great-grandchildren, Sam and Lila Stocking, Seattle, Washington, Matteo Pannunzio, Montreal, QC, Henry and Harrison Measham, Charlottetown, PEI, Connor and Addison Quigley, Adelaide, S. Australia, and James McLeod, Halifax, NS, as well as her beloved and ever faithful cat, Cleo. She is also survived by niece Judith Morehouse Dallegret and family, and James Frederick Morehouse and family, both of Montreal, as well as by many Morehouse and Parker cousins. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial celebration will be held in Sandy Cove in the summer of 2014 with a private interment in the Trinity Anglican Church Cemetery, Sandy Cove at a later date. The family wishes to express its sincere and heartfelt thanks to her faithful caregivers, who helped make it possible for her to continue to live in the home she loved so very much: Ann Hudson, Germaine O'Brien, Cheryl Van Tassel, and Marilyn Walker.
