It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Billard, our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
David died peacefully, Monday, Dec. 16, 2013, surrounded by his loving family and friends, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Born in North Sydney, he was the only son of the late Lloyd and Elma (Vatcher) Billard.
David had been employed with Marine Atlantic since he was a teenager. He began as a stevedore while still attending school and later, aboard the vessels as a steward, deck hand and finally as purser, retiring after 32 years of service.
He would spend his retirement doing the things he enjoyed the most, “fair weather sailing” aboard his sailboat the “Beatrice M”, brook fishing, small game hunting and being a handyman. He took great pleasure in working with wood and was very proud of having built his own home as well as the many renovations over the years.
David is survived by his loving wife, Beatrice (Gillard) Billard; his two sons, Christopher (Tanya), North Sydney, Sheldon of Ottawa; his grandchildren, Emily and Rylee Billard; two step-grandchildren, Brandon Wall, Maggie Wall (Jason Whiffen) and their son, Colby; by his sisters, Caryl Yates, North Sydney, Pat (Charles) MacMaster, Sydney River, Cathy Billard, Sydney, Ann Billard, Point Edward; as well as aunts, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his close friend and brother-in-law, Calvin Gillard, as well as his faithful companion, his beagle, Jake.
Visitation for David will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Friday, from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Carl Fraser officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Hospice/Palliative Care, St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, or any charity.
