HURST, PHILIP D. - The death of Philip Douglas Hurst, husband of the late Barbara (Marley) Hurst, occurred on December 28, 2013 at Kings Way Care Centre. Born in Romsey, Hampshire, England, on November 3, 1919, he was a son of the late Reginald and Betsy (Ryder) Hurst. Philip served with the Royal Navy during World War II. His ship was sunk and he was taken prisoner of war and was interned in a POW camp for four and a half years. He then came to Canada in 1947 and was employed with NB Tel as Supervisor of Reproduction for many years until his retirement in 1977. Philip was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #58, St. Paul's Anglican Church, the Rothesay Senior Citizen Club and the NBTel Pioneers. Throughout his life he enjoyed gardening, woodworking, painting and the company of his cats. He was known for his quick, dry wit and limericks, and was always the perfect gentleman. Survived by his sons; Bruce (Linda) of Rothesay, and Harry (Joanne) of Nauwigewauk, grandchildren; Carolina Dickie (Joe), Laura Stites (Jove), Julia Hurst (Joel Calhoun), Matthew Hurst; brother-in-law, Raymond Marley (Eileen), two nieces and one nephew. Besides his wife, he was predeceased by his infant daughter, Pamela; son, Ralph; brother, Reginald; sister, Lucy Hurst, and daughter-in-law, Susan Hurst.
Resting at Kennebecasis Community Funeral Home, 152 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis, (849-2119) with visiting on Thursday, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Funeral Service will take place on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 11:00 AM from St. Paul's Anglican Church, Rothesay. Interment to take place at Ocean View Memorial Gardens at a later date.
