Gerrit van Nieuw Amerongen
VAN NIEUW AMERONGEN, GERRIT - After a brief and courageous battle with cancer, Gerrit van Nieuw Amerongen, passed away at the Saint John Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 4, 2014 with family by his side. Born in Woudenberg, Holland, he is the son of the late Dirk and Aartje (Kuiter) van Nieuw Amerongen. Gerrit worked for 10 years as the Lead Hand in the Woodshop at the Ontario Science Centre, before moving his family to Saint John. He then spent nearly 20 years with the Canadian Coast Guard as Master Carpenter in Field Maintenance. Gerrit's passion was for fine woodworking mostly as cabinet and furniture making. He loved to take on projects for family and friends. Gerrit enjoyed working outdoors in his garden and walking his dog. He was a generous, kind man and would always be the first to help out. Gerrit is survived by his sons Gregory, Winnipeg, MB and Derek, Saint John; daughters Leigh-Ann (Mike) Allen, Hampton, NB and Wendy (James) Achorn, Sussex, NB; brothers Marinus, Saint John and Arthur (Bernice), Perth Andover, NB; sisters Elizabeth (Johan) Cornelisen, Holland, Guysbertha Traynor, Fort Nelson, BC, Francina Myles, Grand Bay-Westfield, NB, Jeanette Hooper, Saint John and Hermina (Rosaire) Thibodeau, Saint John; grandchildren Austin and Becka, as well as, many extended family members. Gerrit will be sadly missed by all.
Arrangements entrusted to Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm and Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. A memorial service will be held Thursday, January 9, 2014 from Fundy Funeral Home Chapel at 2 pm. Committal in Fernhill Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerrit's memory can be made to the I.W.K., the QE2 Hospital-Cardiac Care Unit or the Arthritis Society.
