Jean McGaughey Diver passed peacefully into God’s hands on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, after a period of ill health. Jean spent her last days at the Prince County Hospital in Summerside, surrounded by family and friends. Jean was born in Peabody, Massachusetts, on May 11, 1928. She was the second of three children born to the late Gervase and Lucy (Curley) McGaughey. Jean was also predeceased by her two brothers, Gavin and Robert. She was also predeceased by several cousins, most recently by her close cousin Alvin Curley. Jean is lovingly remembered by surviving cousins – Mary McGaughey McAllister, Moncton; Julia McGaughey Mitchell, Charlottetown; Morgan McGaughey, Charlottetown; Sr. Margaret McGaughey, Halifax; Wanda Curley Stewart, Kensington; Pat Curley, Summerside; Boyd Curley, Calgary; George McCabe, Middleton; Frances Curley Pepper, Vancouver, Helen Rowe, Ottawa; Alberta Rowe, Toronto. Jean spent her early years in Massachusetts before her family relocated back to Freetown, P.E.I., and then to the family farm in Norboro. Jean attended public school in Norboro and Kensington. She graduated from the Prince of Wales College and taught school for one year in South Freetown. Jean then changed career paths, studying at the Charlottetown School of Nursing before attending Dalhousie University in Halifax graduating in the area of Public Health Nursing. After graduation, Jean returned to P.E.I. to begin her career in Public Health. She worked in Charlottetown and Crapaud for 11 years and then worked out of Summerside as a Public Health nurse for 24 years. She retired after 35 years of service to the Province of P.E.I. Jean had a love for all creatures great and small. She was active in the Cat Action Society and the Humane Society. She fed Mr. Crow regularly along with all birds who visited her home. Jean had many pets throughout the years including Petra, Beau, Micha, Molly, and Maggie Blue. Jean was active in her Catholic faith and played many roles in support of her parish, including cleaning church linens, teaching Catechism, and cooking meals. She was very proud that she once prepared a meal for three bishops. Jean was active in the CWL for many years. She served as the president of the Kensington CWL and was on the provincial executive for seven years. Resting at the Davison Funeral Home, Kensington, for visitation on Thursday from 6:30–9 p.m. Members of St. Mary’s-Holy Family CWL will hold a prayer service at the funeral home Thursday evening at 6:15. Funeral mass Friday at St. Mary’s-Holy Family Church, at 10:30 a.m. Interment later in St. James Cemetery in Summerfield. If so desired, contributions may be made to the P.E.I. Humane Society or the St. James Cemetery Fund. There have been many people who brought joy to Jean’s life. She was appreciative of them. Thank you to all. Also a special thank you to Dr. P. MacKean and Dr. C. MacNearney and the staff at Prince County Hospital.
