Passed peacefully away at Kenny's Pond Retirement Home on Monday, January 13, 2014, Grace Layman, age 94. Predeceased by parents, Stanley and Laura (Torraville) Layman of Fogo; sisters: Mabel (Stirling Cobb) and Gertrude (Peter MacDonald); brothers: Reg (Ivy) and Ray (Muriel); niece, Isobel and nephew, Murray. Survived by nieces: Judith (Harvey Abbott), Edmonton; Caryll Rossiter (Mt. Pearl); nephew, Keith Layman (Rhonda) Lower Sackville and Barbara Layman (Mount Uniacke) and their families; cousin, Ronald Torraville (St. John's) as well as many dear friends including members of The Creaking Bones. Grace's entire adult life was spent in the field of education where she wanted to do "some good." Her early years were spent in Northern Newfoundland and coastal Labrador where she worked with Grenfell Mission. Later Grace became a pioneer in the development of speech and language education at Memorial University of Newfoundland and had a positive influence on the lives of hundreds of students particularly those from rural Newfoundland. It was Grace's wish that her body be donated to the Faculty of Medicine, Memorial University of Newfoundland. A celebration of Grace's life will be held at St. Philip's Anglican Church on Thursday, January 16, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Philip's Anglican Church or the Grace Layman Scholarship Fund at Memorial University of Newfoundland.
