
Douglas Leroy "Doug" Cox
Cox, Douglas LeRoy “Doug”- CP01 (Ret’d) RCN/CF SSM, CD1 – 81, Truro, passed away surrounded by his family Tuesday, 14 January, 2014 at home. Born 5 October, 1932 in Bible Hill, Col. Co., he was the eldest son of the late Allister “Pat” and Olive (Talbot) Cox. Doug joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1949 and retired in 1976 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer 1st Class. He served at sea on both the West and East Coasts of Canada. He also spent tours with the communications trade in Ottawa, ON, Inuvik, NWT; Churchill, Man; Frobisher Bay (Iqaluit); Alert, Nunavut; Moncton NB and Gander NL. Following his retirement from the Navy, Doug worked for 17-years with Farmer Cheese Division, Truro. Following retirement from Farmers, he did many years of volunteer work with the Royal Canadian Legion, Br. 26, Truro where he was a Life Member, a was a Life Member of Suprad Oldtimers’ Assoc. and was a member of the Atlantic Chiefs & Petty Officer’s Assoc.
Doug is survived by sons Shawn (Cheryl) and Patrick (Sally); daughter Sharlene Hennigar (Steve); grandsons Shane and Chad Cox; granddaughters Robynne Cox ; great-granddaughter Graci Cox. He also will be dearly missed by his loving partner Aileen (Hingley) Gaudet.
Doug was predeceased by his loving wife of 50-years Joan Isabel (Falle) Cox; brothers Terry and Philip Cox; sister Sidnie Rutherford.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mattatall~Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. No visitation or funeral service by Doug’s request. A Legion Tribute Service and reception will take place on Saturday, 18 January, 2014 in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 26, 42 Brunswick Street, Truro. Donations in Doug’s memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 26, Truro Building Fund., or to a charity of choice.
