Mary Siemens (nee Unruh)
Mary passed away peacefully on January 10, 2014 in Moose Jaw, SK. She was predeceased by her husband Henry; son Benjamin; parents Benjamin and Meta Unruh; brothers Henry, John (Betty) and Jake (Mary); 2 infant sisters both Anna; and sisters Nettie (Alec) Kardoes and Sarah Unruh. She is survived by her daughter Dora (Art) Braun, 6 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Mary was born in Slovgorod Russia 19 January 1909. At age 17 she came to Canada with her brother Henry arriving to Quebec in early December and travelling by train to Indian Head. She worked for Dr. Hart and later at the tree nursery. Mary and Henry J. Siemens were married on 6 July 1930 and lived in Indian Head Sask. In 1942 Mary, Dora and Benny moved into a new house in Regina while Henry served in WW2. She attended and served faithfully at Mennonite Bretheren Church next door to her and then later attended Faith Baptist Church until she left Regina. Sewing, alterations, needlework, quilting, and gardening were her life work and pleasure. She joyfully anticipated visits from her children and grandchildren. Even in her last years visits from children always got the most smiles and attention. After Henry’s passing in 1976 she continued a busy life and also cared for several elderly people as an assisted living caregiver. Mary was nominated as Woman of the Year in 1999. At 96, unable to manage alone, she moved to Moose Jaw Extendicare where she was adored and lovingly cared for by the staff and Dora until the end. Her memory will be cherished by her family and all who knew her. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Faith Baptist Church, 437 Broadway Ave. E., Regina, SK.
