It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth 'Betty' MacLeod, 97, on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Harbourstone Enhanced Care in Sydney.
Born in North Sydney on Oct. 23, 1916, the daughter of the late William and Ada (Adams) Burrows, Betty was the last surviving member of her family.
She was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church, North Sydney, and at one time a choir member, member of the UCW and the Eastern Star Lodge. She was a former member of St. Columba Church, Leitches Creek.
Betty was a kind, gentle and loving soul and had a very friendly nature with a smile for everyone. She was a great saleslady, having worked at Meloney’s Shoe Store in North Sydney for over 15 years.
Betty is survived by one niece, Betty Anne MacDonald (Gary Fitzgerald), Cambridge, N.S., and by her sisters-in-law, Helen Bennett, Muriel MacInnis and Marjorie MacInnis.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband Alexander MacInnis and her second husband Gordon MacLeod, her brother Walter Burrows and his wife Mary and her sister Jean and her husband Stan Brown.
Visitation for Betty will be held from 7-9 p.m., Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday at St. Matthew Wesley United Church with Rev. David Luker officiating. Burial at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney at a later date.
