Walter Garland McLean, age 91, of Brooklyn, Hants County, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014, at the Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, Q.E. II, Halifax. Born on December 6, 1922, in Grindstone, Magdalen Islands, Quebec, he was the son of the late Seaward and Lilas (Taker) McLean. Walter was a mechanic all his life, starting his career with his brother Herbert, on the Magdalen Islands. He then took a two year business course in St. Peters, Quebec. Walter was in the Air Force and was a veteran of the Second World War. Walter got his mechanical licence from the Nova Scotia Technical College and then moved to Nova Scotia in 1952 with his wife Florence and family. Walter worked at service stations in and around Windsor, building his ESSO Station in Brooklyn on Rte. 14, in 1955 and building his home across the road in 1958. After many years, Walter retired and sold the garage in 1976. Walter came out of retirement to join his son Gary, to start McLean’s Horse Trailers. Walter was very active in community work. Walter was a life time member of the Newport & District Rink, Brooklyn; Maritime Quarter Horse Association; 50 year and the oldest surviving member, and Past Master of Uniacke #128 Masonic Lodge AF & AM; a long time member of the Hants County Exhibition; former councillor for the Municipality of Hants West for over 7 years. Walter did a lot of volunteer work in the community. Walter was very involved in the activities of his children and grandchildren. Walter helped start the Eastern Stock Horse Association in the 70’s. Walter loved to see his children and grandchildren on a saddle going around the barrels or poles. For a number of years, he was the official timer for the gymkhana races. He had a love for animals, be it cats, dogs or horses. Walter’s cat “Spot” is very special to all. Walter was a big NASCAR fan and his man was 24, Jeff Gordon. Walter was also a Toronto Maple Leaf fan and he always had a joke with a twinkle in his eye. Walter is survived by daughters, Deborah (Russ) Croft, Falmouth; Brenda (David) Skinner, California; Judy (Doug) McLean, Waterville; his sons, Gary (Pat) McLean, Scotch Village; Sam McLean, Ardoise; grandchildren, Paul (Jan) Wheadon, St. Croix; Scott (Amanda) McLean and Mark McLean, Scotch Village; Holly (Forrest) McLean, Brooklyn; Jeff (Jessica) Skinner, Washington, DC; Ryan Skinner, Virgin Islands; Megan Skinner, Washington, DC; sisters, Edith and Ethel. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, the former Florence Davis; brothers, James, Hanson, Eric, Arnold, and Herbert; sisters, Muriel, Mildred, Annie, Aileen, Esther, and Dorothy; special friend, Winnifred Rafuse. The family wish to express their sincere thanks, to Doctor MacLeod, and all the nurses and staff of 6 East, at Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, Halifax, for all the special care they gave Walter, during his stay. Uniacke Lodge #128, held a Masonic tribute at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, February 2, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home (902-798-2232), 194 King Street, Windsor, followed by visitations until 9 p.m. Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2014, in Lindsay’s Windsor Funeral Home Chapel, with a private family interment service at the Maplewood Cemetery, Windsor. A reception followed in the Lindsay Family Reception Centre, 184 King Street. Family flowers only, donations were requested to be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society; the Canadian Cancer Society or to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
