King, Burton “Burt” Arnold
Age 86, Burton passed away peacefully Feb 7, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Born Feb 4, 1928 in Digby, N.S. he was the son of the late George and Mable King. Burton spent his early years fishing in Digby with his brothers Jack and Gordie and their father George. At 19, he moved to Halifax to work at the dockyards, where he learned the welding trade. He then moved to Winnipeg, with his new bride Phyllis, and became self-employed working with ornamental iron. Burton and Phyllis and their 3 children eventually headed back to Nova Scotia settling on the Waverley Road where he owned and operated King Ornamental Iron Ltd., until selling the business in 1973. Burton was greatly respected by everyone he dealt with, and his ornamental iron work can still be seen throughout Halifax and the province. Burton and Phyllis moved to the Annapolis Valley in 1973, where he successfully ran King Pools, installing his last swimming pool at the seasoned age of 81! Burton’s quiet charisma and generous hospitality drew people to him, and he had a large network of friends that included customers, employees, neighbours, the “Digby gang”, and people that he met during his annual southern migrations. He was always drawn to the ocean and was lucky to spend his last years living on the shores of the North West Arm admiring all the boats, a cigar and glass of wine in hand, with his side-kick Gypsy.Dad was proud of his family and loved them dearly as they loved him. He leaves behind his daughter Kathy (Shaun) MacLean, Bedford; son Mark (Laura) King, Halifax; daughter-in-law Betty King; grandchildren Haley, Sam, Hannah, Breagh, Sheldon (DJ), Shaun; great-grandchildren Janna, Lucas, Makayla. Dad was the last of his immediate family. He was pre-deceased by son, Mitchell; wife, Phyllis; brothers Jack and Gordie; sisters, Edith and Phyllis. There was a time of remembrance at Bethany United Church, Halifax, N.S. on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at 2:00pm. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to Churchill Academy at www.churchillacademy.ca/sponsor.aspx , a school specializing in learning disabilities. A very special thanks to all the staff of 8.2 Halifax Infirmary whose loving care made all the difference to Burton and his family.
