Gordon MacKinnon of Forsythe Street, New Waterford, passed away Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at New Waterford Consolidated Hospital with his family and good friend Dougie MacPherson by his side.
Born in New Waterford, he was a son of the late Howard and Emmiline (Corbett) MacKinnon.
He was a member of Calvin United Church, New Waterford. Gordie was one of a kind; a special, lovable guy. Most Saturday afternoons would find him at the Army, Navy, Airforce listening to the music of Dinky Cameron. Other times he would lace up the skates at the New Waterford rink and many summers were spent camping at Beaver Cove with his family.
Gordie is survived by three sisters, Faye (Fred MacPhee), Utah (Mario Hogan), Gretta (Allan Kearney); nieces and nephews, especially Melissa whom he loved dearly.
Besides his parents, Gordie was predeceased by two brothers. Howie and Bill and sister, Theresa. He will also be missed by his good buddy and best friend, his cat, 'Baby'.
Visitation will be held today (Tuesday, Feb. 11) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Wateford. A funeral service will take place Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Calvin United Church, New Waterford, with Rev. Duncan Roach officiating. Cremation will follow with burial in Union Grove Cemetery at a later date. Gordie will be taken to the church at noon on Wednesday. A luncheon will be held at the back of the church immediately following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Hospice/Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton, VON, or a charity of one's choice.
