It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we say goodbye to a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, Mary 'Mamie' MacLean, who passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014.
Born in Bras d’Or on July 3, 1912, Mary was the eldest daughter of the late James and Annie (MacIntyre) Young.
Mary enjoyed her bingo games, her visits to the Shrine in Mabou, and her many friends who called or came to visit her over the years.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Mary is survived by her sons, Thomas (Buddy), who cared for her and was by her side until the end; Russell (Agnes), Hector (Brenda), Joey (Kathleen); by her daughters, Theresa (Roddie) Bennett, Josephine (Ernie) Fullom, Norma (David) MacKinnon and by a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her husband, Norman MacLean, her two sons, Sid and George, two grandsons, Trevor and Chris and her great-granddaughter, Charmaine.
The family would like to thank the Red Cross in Sydney, and send a very special thank you to the VON, Northside Homemakers, the staff at the Northside General hospital, Dr. Kohlsmith and his secretary, Karen Pero, for the care shown to our mother.
Visitation for Mary will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Tuesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral mass will take place 10:30 a.m., Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Patrick O’Neill, officiating. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to any charity in Mary’s memory.
