Mary Ann Whatling, 97, formerly of Westmount, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at Taigh Solas of the Northside General Hospital in North Sydney.
Born in Sydney Mines, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Loretta (Cooke) MacLean.
She was a member of Holy Rosary parish, Westmount. Mamie loved to garden and was devoted to her pets over the years and took great interest in supporting animal welfare. A graduate of St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, Class of 1938, she was employed at St. Rita Hospital for a short time before moving to New York City in 1946. There she worked as a nurse at the Brooklyn Eye & Ear Hospital, was a case worker for the Department of Social Services and finally served as a liaison between the Welfare Department and Family Court of Staten Island, NY. She retired back to Cape Breton in the early 1980s.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews and their extended family.
She was predeceased by her husband Ernest in 1986; five sisters, Ethel, Greta, Lorraine, Alice, Theresa and two brothers, Hughie and Philip.
There will be no visitation for the late Mrs. Whatling. A funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel with Rev Doug Murphy officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens, Sydney.
