George Turner, 93, of New Haven, N.S., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Buchanan Memorial Hospital.
Born in New Haven, Victoria County, he was the son of the late Alfred and Mary (Burrage) Turner.
George worked as a fisherman in his early years and as a lighthouse keeper at Cape North (Money Point) until his retirement.
He enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1941 and served in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe with the 15th Field Regiment, Division 4 as a gunner.
George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Theresa (LaRusic); his children, Maureen (Nicky) Grover, Dingwall, NS, Karen, Regina, SK, Kevin (Marilyn), Kamloops, BC and Georgette (Ken), Iona, PE; sister Lillian Morse (Ken), Kingston, NS, brother Alymer, New Haven, NS; grandchildren, Bethany and Jeffrey Grover, Rachael and Taya Turner, Julie and Ben Van de Wiel and by many nieces and nephews.
George is predeceased by brothers Thomas, Walter, Gordon (Peter), Hector and sisters Blanche and Helen.
Cremation has taken place. Mass of Christian Liturgy will be celebrated on Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, at 1 p.m. at St. Margaret of Scotland Church in St. Margaret’s Village, N.S. with Fr. Dan MacDonald officiating. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George’s memory to Cystic Fibrosis Canada or to a charity of choice.
