GRANT, DONALD EARL - It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Donald E. Grant, of Fredericton sadly announce his passing at the Dr. Chalmers Regional Hospital on Friday, February 14, 2014. Born in Saint John, NB on May 20, 1947, he was the son of the late Dr. T. E. and Jane (MacDonald) Grant. Don received his Bachelor of Business Administration from UNB in 1970 and went to work for J.D. Irving, following that for a while he worked for NS Power, NB Government and finally with UNB I.T. in 1979 until his retirement. He was an active member of the Forest Hill United Church, serving as an Administrative Assistant, a Board Member for 6 years, as well as on the Office Administration and Worship Committees. One of Don’s greatest passions was of boating and sailing. He was a member of the Capital City Boat Club, active member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, also a Training Officer and Instructor receiving his Senior Navigator status with the Fredericton Power and Sail Squadron in 2004. Don Captained the Carleton Tour Boat on various occasions and Co-ordinated Courtesy Boat Checks in Fredericton and surrounding areas. He was responsible for setting up Conversation for Koreans, to help them adjust to everyday life, as well as the Canadian Volunteer Income Tax Program since 1996, as to provide year around Income Tax returns for low income individuals. A very well known volunteer throughout his life, he canvassed for the Canadian Cancer Society, worked with the Salvation Army, a long time Blood Donor receiving a certificate for 75 donations, the Harvest Jazz and Blues for 10 years and a Swim Official, being a Master Swimmer. Survived by his wife Mary Elizabeth (Jones, Shields) Grant; father to Melissa Grant (Denis Thibodeau), Michael Grant, Doug Shields, Cara Bostwick (Andy). Predeceased by his first wife Christine Lee Hensen and second wife Margaret Ruth Patterson. Don lived to help others.
Visitation will take place at Bishop’s Funeral Home 540 Woodstock Road on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. A celebration of Don’s life will be held from the Forest Hill United Church on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at 2:00 PM with Rev. Allie Smith assisted by Rev. Monte Peters.
