VOHRA, AHILYA BAI - Ahilya Bai Vohra, 83, who lived with her daughter's family in Edmonton, AB, Canada, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 14th. She was cremated at a simple Hindu service in the presence of family in accordance with her wishes on Monday, February 17th. Ahilya was born on July 8th, 1930, in Punjab, India, the second of three children to Dr. Jia Lal Varma and Savitri Devi Varma. When her parents moved to Kingston, Jamaica, she stayed on in India living with her aunt. After joining her parents in Jamaica, she went on to become a barrister, being called to the Bar at Lincoln's Inn of the Royal Court in London. She went on to marry Bakshi Jawahar Lal Vohra, an electrical engineer. They lived in Stafford, England, where her first child, Anil, was born, before moving to Hardwar, India. In 1970, she visited her parents in Jamaica where she had her second child, Sunita, before moving back to India. In 1975, she moved to St. Catharines, Ontario where she raised her family and became involved with the local Indo-Canadian community. In 1987, she joined her husband Jawahar in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where she lived until his death in 2003. After losing her husband of 43 years, her health began to deteriorate. In 2006, she moved in with her daughter's family in Edmonton, AB where she resided till the time of her passing. She was a voracious reader and loved to engage in spirited debate with family and friends. She will be sadly missed by her son, Anil, his wife, Joan, their children David and Anita, and by her daughter Sunita, her husband, Ken, and their children Alex and Tate, in addition to the family of her sister Sanjukta and late brother Ashoka as well as other family members and numerous friends around the world.
