We sadly announce the passing of this remarkable woman on February 27, 2014 in Williams Country Homes in Hilden She is survived by her children, John (Judy), Judy Bain (Earle), David, Cheryl Fitzgerald (John); her adoring grandchildren, Sherri, Kim, Chris, Margo, Allison, Morgan, Jodie, Melanie, Nick, Jon-david, Megan and Matt. She was great-grandmother to seventeen. Also surviving are sisters-in-law, Jean English, Louise Fitzpatrick; special cousin and childhood friend, Doris (Brown) Salter. Sylvia was predeceased by her soulmate and husband of over 60 years, John “Jack”. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Gervie, Frank; several cousins and her beloved daughter-in-law, Cathy Fitzpatrick. Born in Thorburn, Sylvia and Jack lived many years in New Glasgow, prior to making Truro their home in 1965. They cherished the numerous friendships made through square dancing, skating, cross-country skiing, card games and their annual winter trip to Florida. They derived great pleasure from frequently hosting family and friends at their home in Truro and their cottage on Caribou Island. Mom devoted her life to raising her family and with Dad created a warm and loving home. She was an accomplished cook and homemaker with many talents. After her children left home, Sylvia worked part-time at Martha Murray’s Fabric Store in Truro drawing on her exceptional sewing skills. She volunteered for several years at the Butler Centre, Truro with knitting being one of the many skills she taught clients. An avid gardener, she was a member and former president of the Bible Hill Garden Club. For several years she enjoyed meeting with fellow snowbirds for a meal and a game of cards each month. Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 2 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro; funeral mass on Monday, March 3 at 11:00 am in Immaculate Conception Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro with Father Dariusz Miskowicz officiating. Reception to follow in Campbell Hall. Family flowers only. If desired, donations may be made to the Cathy (Bagnell) Fitzpatrick Bursary Fund, c/o CEC, 34 Lorne Street, Truro, N.S. B2N 3K3 or a charity of choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Trevor Locke for providing many years of competent and compassionate care to our mother.
