PIERCE, Hugh Atwood, age 68, recently of New Smyrna Beach, FL, passed away on Monday, March 3, 2014. Born August 16, 1945, in Staten Island, NY, son of Alice and Marshall Pierce of New Smyrna Beach, FL and Nova Scotia, Canada, Hugh graduated from Ossining High School (NY) in 1963. He served his Country in the U.S. Air Force (1964-1968) based in Hawaii, completed a Vietnam tour and became Airman of the Month. He worked in logging camps and as a US Immigration Officer in British Columbia; married Dec 27, 1969 in Prince Rupert. He finished his Bachelor’s in two years, earned his M.Ed at Ball State where he was Phi Delta Kappa. He taught Industrial Arts and Driver’s Ed in Colchester, VT, and recently Driver’s Ed at Burlington High School. Hugh enjoyed life by being with his family, spending time outside at his ancestral home in Nova Scotia, making wine, beekeeping, gardening, alpine and water skiing, scuba diving, and motorcycling. He loved to fix things and would tinker with anything mechanical. Hugh was a talented woodworker, creating wood toys for his grandkids and holiday decorations for family. He was a member of Lions Club, and local churches in Jericho, VT and East Sable, NS. Survivors include: son, Hugh and his wife Julie Tower-Pierce of East Burke, VT; daughter, Elizabeth Alison Pierce of Burlington, VT; Spouse, Patricia Pierce of Jericho, VT; siblings, John Pierce of Richmond, MA, Marsha and her husband Bill Cox of Morrisville, VT; grandchildren, Naia, Finn, Evvi, Beck Tower-Pierce; four nephews; many cousins and their families. He will be especially remembered for his warm and playful sense of humor. We forever hold him in our hearts. An outdoor celebration of his life will be held in New Smyrna Beach on Friday, March 7, 2014, with a committal in East Sable Nova Scotia.
