SAUNDERS, JOHN WILLIAM THOMAS - It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of John William Thomas Saunders which occurred at his home surrounded by family on Friday, March 14th, 2014. Born 1939, in Saint John, he was the son of the late John and Helen (Owens) Saunders. In 1955 John left school to provide for his family. His first job was delivering groceries on a bicycle to a convent on Rockland Road. From there he worked for Emerson Wheaton Furniture Store. He worked for General Bakeries in sales and returns from 1957 to 1970. Then he moved to Ontario and worked for Christies in packaging, shipping, receiving and loading which was his favorite job from 1970 to 1978. He moved to New Minas N.S. and took a management course and was a bakery manager at The Country Gardens store in Wolfville until it closed from 1978 to 1990. He then came back to NB and worked as a baker at the IGA in Prince Edward Square. From there he went to Evernice bakery on Sand Cove Road in 1991 until his retirement in 2004.
John is survived by his daughters Helen McDougall (David) of Nova Scotia, Marie Saunders (Christopher) of Rothesay, Carol Saunders of Alberta, Lorrie DeLong (Derreck) of Quispamsis; brothers Richard of Saint John, Randy (Florence) of Saint John, Brian of Calgary, Bill of Calgary, Daryl (Christine) of Nauwigewauk; sisters Barbara Doiron (Gerald) of Saint John, Linda McKinney (Roy) of Quispamsis, Mary O’Hara (Richard) of Quispamsis, Kathy Jenkins (Dow) of Quispamsis; grandchildren Cheyenne, Adam, Will, Myles, Miranda, Kyle, Rebekah, Taylor; great-grandchildren Reann, Jordan, Janette, Sebastian, Anthony, Asher; one expected great-grandaughter and great-grandson; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his son John Fitzgerald and sister Dorothy Hamm.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held on Sunday and Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm. Funeral service will take place from the Fundy Funeral Home chapel on Tuesday, March 18th at 11 am followed by an interment at Fernhill Cemetery.
