TRENTON – Wilfred Paul “Woody” MacDonald, 86, Trenton, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 15, 2014 in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, surrounded by his family.
Born October 13, 1927 in the former family home on Duke Street, Trenton, he was a son of the late Daniel Robert and Emily Matilda (Warrington) MacDonald and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Woody was a draftsman by trade, but began his love and pursuit of music at the age of four. A multi-instrumentalist, he shared his musical gifts throughout the years as a teacher and performer for many community events and seniors groups. Woody’s favourite musical moments were when he was accompanying his family members. He was a faithful member of First United Church, Trenton, where he had served as an elder, pianist and organist, and as president of the Men’s Club. Woody’s other passion was amateur radio. Licensed as VE1-FM since 1952, he received numerous citations for his on air volunteer work when specialized communications were required. He was the Trenton Airport historian and member of Clan Donald Canada. Woody was happily married to his wife, Marilyn, for 52 years, sharing a lifelong appreciation for music and love of family. A man of extensive knowledge and personal integrity, he was affectionately known as “Papa” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The time he spent with them, and his daughters, will be forever cherished.
Surviving are his loving daughters, Sonya (Sandy) Baird, Chance Harbour; Paula MacDonald, Trenton; adoring grandchildren: Megan Baird, Hilary Hemsworth and Daniel Baird; precious great-grandchildren: Brandon, Ashlyn and Julia; sisters-in-law: Charlotte “Shy” MacDonald, Trenton; Jeanine Wagner, Plymouth; Barbara Sutherland, Halifax; brothers-in-law, Blane (Helen) Humphreys, London, Ont., and Ron (Tish) Humphreys, Hillside; many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Eris Marilyn (Humphreys); sister, Violet Trowell; brothers: Kenneth, Harry, Raymond, Calvin and Donald.
The family will receive visitors 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in First United Church, Trenton with Rev. Alfred Woodworth officiating. Private interment will be in Hillside Cemetery.
Family flowers only. Donations may be made in Woody’s memory to First United Church, Trenton or Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
