With heavy hearts, the family of Ethelbert Monahan, regret to announce his passing on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late Robert and Bridget (Whelan) Monahan. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1970, Bert enjoyed his friends, bowling, dancing and Club 55.
He is survived by his companion and best friend, Isabel McPhee; sons, Michael, Sydney, Paul (Jamie), Ontario; daughters, Carol, Patricia (Tilman) and Theresa (Angelo), all of Ontario and is survived by 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are stepchildren, Leona (Cliff), Donald (Josie), Rochell (Rob), Marie (John) and Robert (Dawn).
He was predeceased by his wife, Nellie (Quarmby) and son, David and by four brothers and five sisters.
There will be no visitation for the late Mr. Monahan. Funeral service will be held at T.W.Curry Parkview Chapel on Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tom Whent officiating. Interment at a later date.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the nurses and staff at 4 A.
