
Hazel Dixon
Hazel Winnona Dixon, 81, Hillcrest Drive, Baddeck, N.S., died peacefully on April 20, 2014, at Victoria County Memorial Hospital while surrounded by her family.
Born in Ingonish, she was the daughter of the late Patrick J. Donovan and Marjorie (MacIntyre) Donovan, Neil's Harbour.
She was a member of St. Michael's parish, Baddeck.
Married in 1950, she and husband Tommy moved to Baddeck in 1959 and made their home here. Over the years she worked as a cook and baker for various establishments including Notre Dame Convent, the Thistledown Restaurant and the Cabot Trail Motel. In her younger years she was active in the CWL and more recently enjoyed the 45s card games at the parish hall.
But her greatest passion was hockey, from the Old-timers League (Go Reds!) to the intermediate league and high school hockey. But the Leaf's were her greatest love, shared with husband Tommy, they were both true Leaf fans.
She is survived by her mother Marjorie (MacIntyre) Donovan, Neils Harbour; sons, Roland Dixon (Laura), Baddeck, Parker (Wanda), Baddeck, and daughter Lorelei Dixon, Baddeck; brothers, Ross (Yvonne), Ingonish, Karl (Janet), Ingonish, Allen (late Brenda), Ingonish, Angus (Isabel), Ottawa; sisters, Laura (John) Provost, Ottawa, Constance (Hector) Therrien, Ottawa; sisters-in-law, Carole, Ingonish, Jean, Ottawa, and Yvette, Ottawa; grandchildren, Ashley (Matt) Seely, Saint John, N.B., Ariel Dixon (Mitchel Fraser), Baddeck, Charley Dixon, Yorkton, Saskatchewan, Randy (Shona) Yorke, Southhampton, N.S.; Danny (Julie) McCulley, Amherst, N.S., Sandy (Krystal) McCulley, Five Islands, N.S.; great-granddaughter Willow Patricia Fraser, her greatest joy these past few years, and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Predeceased by husband Thomas G. Dixon, granddaughter Terri Winnona Dixon, her very special angel - her father Patrick J. Donovan, brothers, Patrick (Jean), Daniel (Yvette) and Mark (Carole) and sister Patricia.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the Victoria County Memorial Hospital for the excellent personal care mom received. Special thanks to Dr. Genge, Dr. Chow and the nurses who were there for all of us throughout mom's illness. An extra special thanks to Freda and Tish who were with us at the end and to Amanda and Jewel for always making mom smile.
Visitation will be held at MacAskill's Funeral Home, 43 Grant St., Baddeck, N.S., Wednesday, April 23, 2014, from 4-8 p.m. The funeral will take place at St. Michael's Parish, Thursday, April 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. with Fr. Calista officiating. Burial at St. Michael's Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society or the IWK, which held a special place in her heart.
