It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Gregory Fennell on April 24, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Whitney Pier on July 21, 1925, he was the son of the late Thomas Michael Fennell and Frances Clare (Dawe) Fennell.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lorraine (Chisholm) Fennell of MacGillivray Guest Home and their four children, Joan (Joe) Burt of Sydney, Jim (Janice) Fennell of Red Islands, Bill (Kara) Fennell of Sydney and Bruce (Marcella) Fennell of Calgary. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Charlene, Laura, Kaitlynn, Lauren, Andrea and his great-grandchildren, Emma and Caitlyn. He will be sorrowfully missed by his surviving sister, Terrie Troke of South Bar and by his many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Richard, Robert, William, Frank, Leo, Tom, Michael, Peter and sisters, Mary Troke and Kathleen Campbell and two siblings in infancy.
Greg worked for the Sydney Steel Corporation with 40 years' service when he retired at the age of 57, in 1983, as a scale repairman. After retirement, Greg remained busy working with scales for many years, occassionally allowing time for golf and going to dances with Lorraine. Greg was a generous man, helping his family and friends with any task asked of him, always providing hard work and good advice. He was a true gentleman, who will be remembered for his devotion to Lorraine and his family, hard work, modesty, and his love of God. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church and previously Immaculate Heart Church, Mira Road. Greg was instrumental in Mass for Shut-Ins, in its early years.
The family would like to thank the staff of the MacGillivray Guest Home for all their support to Greg and our family. Also the CBRH 4B, Palliative Care and special thanks to May Chisholm.
Greg will continue to help others as his remains have been donated to Dalhousie Medical School.
A Celebration of Greg's life will be held at Sacred Heart Church, Sydney, on April 29th at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to their charity of choice.
