ETHEL GAMBLE (HLADY)
1926 - 2014
It is with great sadness that the daughters of Ethel Gamble announce the passing of their loving mother on April 28, 2014. Ethel was born in November of 1926 in Moose Jaw to parents of Ukrainian decent. Along with her older brother Walter and younger sister Anna, they resided on south hill, attending King Edward Elementary School and later Peacock Technical High School. Ethel loved to be extremely active, participating in numerous sports and activities, but her real love was dancing. Her athletic success in this activity took her all over to dance competitions and performances, but more importantly, led her to meet her future husband Norm Gamble, at Temple Gardens. They were married in June of 1945. Four years later their first daughter Linda was born, followed shortly by Brenda. Their third child, Debbie, arrived in 1956. Ethel was the ultimate home-maker. She was an accomplished gardener, preserver of her produce, a wonderful cook, sewer, and one could often hear the chattering of Ethel’s knitting needles as she worked away creating beautiful afghans and children’s sweaters.
Once Ethel’s children were in school full time and she gained success as a “domestic engineer” she set her sights on a new challenge – “marketing and sales” and so joined the team at Eaton’s where she greeted her customers with a smile and a warm greeting for the next 21 years. Additionally, she also reconnected with her previous pastime, that being socially and physically active. She became an accomplished bowler, dart-player, and curler, and she did her best to become a seasoned golfer with her husband Norm. Ethel took great pride in her daughters’ athletic endeavours and could frequently be found at numerous venues fulfilling the role of cheerleader. When she wasn’t cheering at the top of her lungs, she could frequently be found at the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans aiding with various types of service work. After 45 years of commitment, she was honored with the “Lifetime Member” award. Ethel was predeceased by her loving and committed husband Norm, her brother Walter Hlady and her sister Anna Tremblay. She is survived by her three daughters and their husbands, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren: Linda and Bob Symenuk of Moose Jaw and their children Jeff Symenuk, Jamie (Shaun) Helland and her children Eric and Emma; Brenda and Paul McKay of Camrose and their son Darren (Laurie) McKay and his daughter Sierra; Debbie and Terry Sargeant of Taber and their sons Jordan, Paul and Kyle.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at W.J. Jones and Son Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 1:30 pm. Della Ferguson will officiate. Interment will be at a later date at Rosedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Moose Jaw Health Foundation, 455 Fairford St. E., S6H 9Z9 or the Canadian Cancer Society, 61 Ross St. W., S6H 2M2 would be appreciated by the family. In living memory of Ethel, a memorial planting will be made by W.J. Jones & Son Funeral Home. Please sign the memorial register at website: www.wjjonesandson.com (Obituaries).
