New Glasgow – Emerson Stewart, age 82, of New Glasgow, passed away Sunday, May 4, 2014 at home, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Gabarus, Cape Breton, he was the son of the late Dan and Myrtle (Gray) Stewart. He attended post-secondary school in Halifax and graduated with Business and his RIA designation. He began his career at the Nova Scotia Light and Power Company, and then moved on to the Children’s Hospital in Halifax as Business Manager while continuing his studies for Hospital Administration. His first job as Hospital Administrator was at Sydney City Hospital where he spent 9 years. He then accepted the position of Assistant Hospital Administrator at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow where he worked until his retirement. He was there for twenty years. Emerson will be remembered by those who worked with him as a man of much compassion and honesty; a true gentleman. He enjoyed his involvement as a member of Trinity United Church, Gyros, former Rotarian in Sydney, Legion and the St. Andrew’s Society. A true lover of the outdoors, Emerson enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, curling, golf and travel with friends and family. He was a person of integrity and had respect for all people he encountered along his life’s journey. Most of all he will be remembered as a much loved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Barb (O’Brien); daughters: Donna (John) Moore, Brampton, ON; Heidi (Rod) McKinley, Richmond Hill, ON; Shelly (Chuck) MacLean, Lyons Brook, NS; grandchildren: Craig and Anna Moore, Connor and Christie McKinley, Aaron, Liam and Grace MacLean; sisters: Lillian Harriss, Gabarus, NS; Shirley (John) Horne, Horne’s Road, NS; Gwen (Roy) Teal, Gabarus, NS; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Craig Emerson Stewart. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation by request. Funeral service 2 pm Wednesday in Trinity United Church with Rev. Donna Tourneur officiating. Reception to follow. Donations in his memory may be made to the Aberdeen Health Foundation, Aberdeen Palliative Care Society or Canadian Cancer Society.
