It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Allister Murray Matheson on Tuesday, May, 6, 2014, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Sydney. Murray was an avid hockey player playing in nets for Conception Bay Cee Bees in Newfoundland (Boston Farm Team).
Later in Glace Bay for the famed Glace Bay Cinderella Miners, he went on to play for the Sydney Millionaires Old Timers and wrapping up his hockey days with the Dicemen.
He loved to bowl and enjoyed his Tuesday nights with the Cedars Club league. He was also a member of the Commercial League 400 club.
Murray and Louise went with six wonderful couples to the Deervale Cabins in Ingonish every Victoria Day weekend for the past 45 years.
A long-time member of the Sydney Lebanese and Syrian Benevolent Society, he volunteered for their Friday night bingo. Murray spent most of his career at Oland’s Brewery. Then went on to work for Zepleland Brothers Construction until his retirement.
Murray is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Louise (Libbus); sister, Marilyn Ritchie, Terrace, B.C.; brothers, Donnie (Carrol), Sydney, and Clarence (Wendy); sisters-in-law, Esther (Alex) Tomko, Karen Boozan (Stuart Robertson), Sydney, Madaline Libbus, River Bougois; brother-in-law, Roddy Watkins (Brenda); aunt Minnie Matheson; also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews as well as many cousins, especially Betty.
He was predeceased by his father, Dan Matheson, Gabarus, his mother, Annie 'Nan' MacDonald, Sydney, stepmother, Nellie Matheson, father and mother-in-law, Charlie and Violet 'Babe' Libbus to whom he was like a son, brothers-in-law, Joseph Libbus and Charles 'Sandy' Libbus.
The family would like to thank Murray’s close friend, Donnie Morrison who was “like a brother to him”. Nieces Renata and Stephanie who were by his side whenever he needed them. Friend and neighbour Adam Lewis and family for all their support during this difficult time. The wonderful staff at the CBRH especially 4B and emergency department and doctors D'Intino, Wilks, Wong and Dr. Mark Sampson.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. with a tea to follow at the Cedars Club, MacKenzie Street, Sydney.
