With great sorrow, we announce the death of William A. 'Bill' MacLeod of Halifax and Ingonish on April 29, 2014.
Born in Sydney on Nov. 27, 1942, Bill was the son of the late John W. (Jack) and Emily (McLean) MacLeod.
He grew up in Ingonish and moved to Halifax in 1964. He worked for the Department of National Defense for 33 years, retiring in 1997. Bill was a very active member of the Dockyard Branch of Toastmasters International and served as Area Governor of District 45 in 1972-73. He was a whiz at “table topics” and received several awards for his humorous speeches. As a child, Bill was baptized at home, by his grandfather Rev. A.S. McLean. An adherent of First Baptist Church in Halifax, he was baptized there by Rev. Dr. W. Carey Harvey.
He was a proud Conservative and a member of the Monarchist League of Canada. A Mason, Brother MacLeod was a member of Keith Lodge No. 17, since 1986. Bill was a man who appreciated tradition, enjoyed all kinds of music, had a terrific sense of humour and was a caring, kind gentleman who always put family first.
He was a loving son, exceptional brother and proud uncle who was looking forward to becoming a great uncle in October.
Predeceased by his parents, Bill is survived by his sister Della and brother-in-law Darryl Roode, his nephews and their wives, Andrew and Katie, Jonathan and Sarah.
During his short stay in the hospital, Bill expressed his thanks many times to the medical personnel for the caring and kindness with which he was treated. We, his family, echo those thanks.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the Ingonish United Church on May 19th at 2 p.m. with Rev. Margie Wood officiating. Interment will be with his parents in the Presbyterian Cemetery, Ingonish. A reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ingonish United Church or a charity of your choice.
