It is with great sadness that the family of Doris Iva Tower age 89, of Amherst announce her passing on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Upper Nappan, NS.
Born in River Hebert, she was a daughter of the late Lennox and Mabel (Harrison) Wood.
Doris owned and operated Tower’s Grocery on Cornwall Street, Amherst for 37 years which was also known as Doris’ Store. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing cards in her younger years. Doris worked for Maritime Pant Factory and the Colonial Inn in Amherst. She was a homemaker and was a mother and grandmother figure to the children in the neighbourhood.
She will be sadly missed by her daughters Cheryl (Stephen) Burke and Shelley Tower both of Amherst, sons Gary (Louise) and Leonard (Betty) both of Amherst, grandchildren Gaylene (Tony) , Monica (Billie), Beth (Chris) , Sandra (Rod), Christopher (Cyndy), Eryn (Matt) and Mitchell, great grandchildren Haley, Connor, Hunter, Deavan, Bryson, Michayla, Morgan, Madeline, Mason, Hannah, Ethan and Marley and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Doris was predeceased by her husband Leonard Stanley Tower, granddaughter Karen Elaine Tower, sister Rachel Amos and brother Edgar (Sonny) Wood.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Campbell’s Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst, NS. (902-667-9906)
Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. from Campbell’s Chapel with Ruth Gamble officiating.
Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery.
Memorial donations in Doris’ memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or the VON.
