It is with great sadness that the family of Audrey M. Cummings announces her passing at the Cove Guest Home, Sydney on Thursday, May 8, 2014.
Born January 30, 1922, in Moncton and raised in Sussex, N.B., Audrey was the eldest of Fred and Etta Ross’ four children.
She graduated first in her 1944 nursing class from Saint John General, and had a long and satisfying career in her chosen profession of obstetrics. She was Head Nurse at Saint John General and pursued further studies at McGill University and St. Mary’s Hospital, London, UK before teaching obstetrics at the Grace Maternity in Halifax.
Active all her life in church activities, CGIT, Women’s Health Clinics, and the Meals on Wheels Program, Audrey was an excellent seamstress, an avid knitter, bridge player and reader. She was an adventurous cook, baker and recipe collector and spent many happy hours in her beautiful flower gardens. Married to husband Don for 55 years, they spent many wonderful summers at their cottage in Jimtown, Antigonish Co, with their family and friends. Upon retirement, they maintained those friendships and enjoyed their winters in Florida. Their last few years were spent in Sydney, with daughter Peg and most recently, as a resident of the Cove Guest Home. In recent years, Audrey faced declining health, without complaint, and maintained a determined, positive outlook as her eyesight and mobility declined.
Audrey is survived by her daughter, Peg, Sydney; brother, Dr. Jim Ross (Dr. Betty Ross), Caledonia, NS; nieces, Joanne, Kate, Susan, Wendy and Carol; nephews, Rob, Andrew, Greg and Jeff, as well as numerous grandnieces and nephews.
Audrey was predeceased by her husband, Don (2010); sisters, Thelma and Dorothy; lifelong friend, Phyllis; brother, Richard (in infancy); and in-laws, Louis and Hazel Cummings, Jean and Paul Ritchie, Ross Friars, Jack Marr and Dr. O.C. MacIntosh.
A memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Monday, May 12 at 10 a.m., with Reverend Thomas Whent officiating. A committal service will be held at a later date in Merigomish Cemetery.
Thanks are extended to the nurses and staff of Spanish Bay and the Cove Guest Home for the attentive care and friendship shown to Audrey.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Audrey’s memory may be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
