It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Ernestina Primina Nearing, 95, of Maple Hill Manor on Sunday, May 25, 2014 at the Manor.
Born in New Waterford, she was a daughter of the late Giovanni and Guithia (Rassolini) Pozzebon.
Ernestina was a member of the Parish Church of St. Leonard, New Waterford. She was one of the first professionally trained hairdressers in the area and owned and operated Ernestina's Beauty Salon on Plummer Avenue for over 50 years. Ernestina received the Lifetime Acheivement Award from the Cosmetolgy Association of Nova Scotia along with several other hairdressing acolades. She was instrumental in training many hairdressers in the area and proved to be both inspirational to them and any other person who had the priveledge of knowing her. Ernestina was a great listener and would offer her advice if someone was in need. Ernestina, although not vane, was intrigued by fashion, beauty and style and used this interest to her benefit while browsing through clothing stores for the latest outfit. She also enjoyed gardening and dancing but most of all, she loved being surrounded by family and friends, especially when she was cooking one of her famous Italian meals. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are daughter Judi (Francis) McNeil, New Victoria; sons, Greg (Florence), Lake Ainslie, Richard (Joyce), New Waterford, Michael, at home with whom she resided for many years; grandchildren, Frankie Conrad, Andrew McNeil, Lisa, Melissa, Carla and Juanita Nearing; great-grandchildren, Taylor and Hannah, Josh, Ethan, Kiersten and Caleb; several nieces and nephews.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Besides her parents, Ernestina was predeceased by her husband Michael A. 'Vertie' 'Block' Nearing, sisters, Secundina — her twin, and Inez Cormier, brothers, Gino, Caridi and Ernesto.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A funeral mass of celebration will be held Thursday, May 29 at 2 p.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Fr. Ray Huntley officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Plummer Avenue, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Maple Hill Manor.
