McGlashing, Mildred “Serena” (Whippie) – 81, Truro, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2014. Born in Belmont, she was a daughter of the late Percy “Beecher” and Mary (Wilson) Whippie. Serena graduated from the Registered Nursing Program at Moncton General Hospital, NB and then came to Truro in 1956 where she worked at the Colchester Regional Hospital and was responsible for opening the first Recovery Unit. Her duties covered such areas as Head Nurse, Acting Director of Nursing and being responsible for the Sterilization Unit over a period of a 34 year nursing career. She was also involved in the Bible Hill Recreation Association. Serena enjoyed traveling and being with her friends and family. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her children, Rod, Boston, (Belmont), Mass., USA, Lynn (Paul) Faulkner, Debert, Harold (Jennifer), Miramichi, NB, Carol (Jack) Babineau, Truro, Daphna (Jack) Reid, Bedford; sister, Louise Myers; brother, Frank (Joan) Whippie; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Beside her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Russell Harold; sister Sharril MacDonald. Cremation has taken place. No visitation or service at her request. Interment to be held on Monday, June 2 at 10 a.m. at Crossroads Cemetery, Valley. Donations in her memory may be made to a charity of choice.
